How to make a Windshield Shade Solar Funnel Oven

How to make a Windshield Shade Solar Funnel Oven

Materials needed:
A reflective accordion-folding car sunshade
A Cake rack (or wire frame or grill)
 (4 ½ in.) of Velcro
Black pot
Bucket or plastic wastebasket
A plastic baking oven bag
A oven thermometer
  1. Lay the sunshade out with the notched side toward you, as above.
  2. Cut the Velcro into three pieces, each about 1 ½ inches long.
  3. Hand sew one half of each piece, evenly spaced, onto the edge to the left of the notch; sew the matching half of each piece onto the underneath size to the right of the notch, so that they fit together when the two sides are brought together to form a funnel. (see below)  Note:  I first tried sewing these on a sewing machine, but found it cut through the reflective material.
  4. Press the Velcro pieces together, and set the funnel on top of a bucket or a round or rectangular plastic wastebasket.
  5. Place a black pot on top of a square cake rack, placed inside a plastic baking bag.  A standard size rack (10 in.).  This is placed inside the funnel, so that the rack rests on the top edges of the bucket or wastebasket.  Since the sunshade material is soft and flexible, the rack is necessary to support the pot.  It also allows the suns rays to shine down under the pot and reflect on all sides.  If such a rack is not available, a wire frame could be made to work as well.  Note: the flexible material will squash down around the sides of the rack.

The funnel can be tilted in the direction of the sun.
A stick placed across from one side of the funnel to the other helps to stabilize it in windy weather.
After cooking, simply fold up your “oven” and slip the elastic bands in place for easy travel or storage.
I have found this totally simple solar oven extremely practical, as it is so lightweight and easy to carry along anywhere.  But in addition, it has reached a higher temperature in a shorter time than all the other models I have experimented with so far. I was able to buy all of the things needed at the Dollar Tree keeping the cost for this solar funnel oven under six dollars.

I Gave This Water Filter System A Five Star Rating

Big Berkey Water Filter & Purifier

I just bought this system and can not begin to tell you that it is one piece of equipment that my family and I could not live without.  I give the Big Berky a five star rating.

The Big Berkey system is the ideal system for use at home, travel, outdoor activities or during unexpected emergencies.

This powerful system purifies both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries where regulations may be substandard at best. Perfect for everyday use, outdoor activities and a must in hostile environments where electricity, water pressure or treated water may not be available.

To learn more you will find it under the water treatment and storage tab on the next page,

Echinacea – Purple Coneflower - 130+ Seeds/packet
Results of archeological digs indicate that Native Americans may have used echinacea for more than 400 years to treat infections and wounds and as a general "cure-all." Throughout history people have used echinacea to treat scarlet fever, syphilis, malaria, blood poisoning, and diphtheria. Although this herb was popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, its use began to decline in the United States after the introduction of antibiotics. Echinacea preparations became increasingly popular in Germany throughout the 20th century. In fact, most of the scientific research on echinacea has been conducted in Germany.

Several laboratory and animal studies suggest that echinacea contains active substances that enhance the activity of the immune system, relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and have hormonal, antiviral, and antioxidant effects. For this reason, professional herbalists may recommend echinacea to treat urinary tract infections, vaginal yeast (candida) infections, ear infections (also known as otitis media), athlete's foot, sinusitis, hay fever (also called allergic rhinitis), as well as slow-healing wounds.

Cayenne Long Red Thin Hot Pepper - 90+ Seeds/packet
Cayenne is most widely regarded as a circulatory stimulant said to strengthen the heart and blood vessels while promoting increased vitality.

Borage - 130+ Seeds/packet
Several parts of this plant are useful in the kitchen! Young leaves can be added to salads, and pretty blue flowers can be candied, used as a garnish, or added to drinks-- especially teas!
In modern herbalism, Borage is said to be effective against weak or diminished adrenal function, fevers, inflammation, sore and inflamed eyes, colds, bronchitis, chronic catarrh, congestion, pleurisy and fever.

Pleurisy Root - Asclepias Tuberosa - 50+ Seeds/packet
Some Native American legends tell of the roots being used as a body wash for lifting and running strength. Also used as a drug in chant lotion, and as a ceremonial emetic. Asclepias tuberosa has a long history of use as a valuable alternative medicine and is one of the most important of the indigenous American species. Butterfly Weed is used internally in the treatment of diarrhea, dysentery, chronic rheumatism, and as an expectorant. It has a specific action on the lungs, making it a valuable medicinal herb in all chest complaints and in the treatment of many lung diseases.

Urtica Dioicia - Nettle - 150+ Seeds/packet
Used in ancient times by the Romans for boosting leg circulation, the fibrous stalks were used to make a fine cloth. Nutritious, Nettle can be used as a substitute for greens when cooking and is nutrient dense with many vitamins and minerals.

Nettle tea has been used to treat asthma as well as for allergy and cold relief by the loosening of congestion. Regarded as a diuretic, Nettle helps maintain kidney health and function. It is also used in homeopathic treatments of anemia, menstrual relief and prostate health. In juiced form, Nettle is used as a natural bug spray!

Scutellaria Lateriflora - Mad-dog Skullcap - 50+ Seeds/packet
Herbalists claim it is an effective headache remedy, great for insomnia and both calms and strengthens the nervous system. Flowering tops of skullcap are used in daily teas as well as formulas for chronic conditions.

Called Mad-dog because the tea was once used as a folk remedy for rabies. Enjoy its numerous small blue flowers from July through September or put the leaves in a pillow to induce restful sleep.

Culver's Root - 200+ Seeds/packet
Historically Culver's Root has also been used as a tonic to treat liver and gallbladder disorders and to promote healthy bile flow.
Culver's root is a native North American plant that is well established in Native American herbal medicine. In the Southern U.S., it is still used extensively as a tonic for the stomach and a blood purifier and is known as Black Root. Culver's extract has also been used effectively  for diarrhea, chronic constipation, indigestion,  sallow complexion and dull frontal headaches

Hyssopus officinalis - Hyssop - 150+ Seeds/packetThe bright blue flowers of this member of the mint family add lovely color to your herb garden! Leaves may be brewed into a tea with soothing and medicinal properties for colds, flu, sore throat, bruises, and burns.

It is also said to be effective as an expectorant and to promote improved circulation and digestion.

Lemon Balm - 400+ Seeds/packet
Lemon Balm is anti-viral, so the tea is great to drink if you’re feeling under the weather.  The hot tea brings on a sweat that is good for relieving colds, flus and fevers and an anti-viral agent has been found that combats mumps, cold sores and other viruses.  Lemon Balm might also help with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Shingles, due to the anti-viral action.

One of Lemon Balm’s key medicinal qualities is as a tranquilizer.  It calms a nervous stomach, colic, or heart spasms.  The leaves are reputed to also lower blood pressure.  It is very gentle, although effective, so is often suggested for children and babies.

Lemon Balm tea has been shown to inhibit the division of tumor cells.  It may also be beneficial to those with Grave’s disease-studies indicate that the herb slightly inhibits the thyroid-stimulating hormone and restricts Grave’s disease, a hyperthyroid condition.

Lemon Balm’s anti-histamine action is useful to treat eczema and headaches and accounts for the centuries old tradition of placing the fresh leaf on insect bites and wounds.  A fomentation of Lemon Balm may also help reduce the swelling associated with gout.

Through research, Lemon Balm has clearly demonstrated the ability to impact the limbic system of the brain and “protect” the brain from the powerful stimuli of the body and should be part of any ADHD formula.  It smells a lot better than Ritalin, too.

Catnip - 250+ Seeds/packet
Catnip is a vigorous growing mint loved by cats. It is brewed into a tea to treat colds, headaches, flu, and fever. Tea also has a relaxing effect on children. Plants grow up to 36” tall. Grayish green leaves have a strong mint-like flavor and may be harvested 75 to 85 days after sowing.Dried, it is used as a stimulant for cats as well as an excellent tea to help you sleep.
